Juvenile Diabetes Week
Every year the Brothers of Alpha Pi host a variety of events in order to raise funds to donate to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
JDRF is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes in the world. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump – each day, every day of their lives.
This year we raised $260 towards the children and research. It’s important to us that we do what we can to spread awareness about diabetes and support research. It breaks our hearts to imagine that children have to suffer everyday by dealing with diabetes. This year we set Oct. 13 – 17 as Juvenile Diabetes Week. We held tables in the University Center Atrium with information about JDRF. To change things up, on Quad Friday Oct 15. we rented a Dunk Tank in order to help collect donations and spread awareness. That same day we also cooked hot dogs in order to invite people to walk; which is our main event.
JDRF San Antonio holds a 5k walk at the Alamodome and we try to have a large team to show St. Mary’s support for the cause. We would like to give thanks to the Ladies of Delta Zeta for joining us on the walk. At 7:30 am we met in front of AACC (aka Gym) where we provided snacks and we departed for the walk at 8:00 am. A majority of our brothers left earlier at 5:30 am in order to help setup the walk. Overall we had very successful event and would like to thank all those who we’re apart of our cause; especially SGA (Student Government Association) we couldn’t have done it without you.
